When the Spaniards made their way into what is now the southwestern part of the United States, they encountered the local residents, now known as Anasazi /the Ancient Ones or the ancestral puebloans. The Spaniards built many churches and missions along their path and we now have numerous architectural examples from both cultures to marvel at and study.   New Mexico has many interesting examples of Spanish churches and missions.  They  are beautiful to look at, even when they lie crumbling.  Some, such as the Old Church in Corrales, NM, have been restored and are still in use.  The four corners region of the United States contains several well-known  archeological sites.  Photographs in this gallery include shots from Mesa Verde National Park, CO,  Canyon of the Ancients National Monument  (Hovenweep), CO/UT,  and Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Chinle, AZ.
